Mamuk Ismuntoro’s photographs in this book portray the loss of community and livelihood of villagers in Porong dan Jabon, Sidoarjo, East Java. They also display landscapes of Javanese countryside and how the hot stream of mudflow has uprooted the residents social live. Tanah Yang Hilang is dominated by a series of images of an artificial mud lake landscape which since its formation has become one of the most problematic ecological features in Indonesia. And the perspective the book offers is the destructve force of nature against our social lives.

A perspective which perhaps we often too often, even find in various media. Anton Novenanto, Cultural Sociologist, Brawijaya University
